Working as a Boatman
As a Boatman, you are responsible for carrying out sea transports and, where applicable, on land and on/over ice. The work includes maintenance and upkeep of the Swedish Maritime Administration's property and equipment. The role includes participating in rescue missions, for which we offer special further training. Operations are conducted around the clock, all year round, which means that both day, evening, and night shifts occur according to a set work schedule. Work periods range from 1-7 days, depending on where in the country you work.
The pilot boat is manned by two Boatmen, one of whom is the captain and the other is the mate/deckhand. To serve as a mate, a minimum qualification of Ship's Officer Class VII and internal training is required. To serve as a captain, a minimum qualification of Ship's Officer Class VI and internal training is required.
Sweden is divided into nine pilot transport areas along our long coast. We are now looking for boatmen for the East area, which includes the pilot stations of Oxelösund and Landsort.
Who are you?
You must meet the following requirements:
- minimum qualification of Ship's Officer Class VII (not limited to inland waters)
- minimum degree of Engine Officer Class VIII
- Basic Safety certificate
- minimum ROC certificate
- medical certificate for seafarers (deck service in unrestricted waters)
- B driver's license (manual transmission vehicle)
- good skills in reading and speaking Swedish and English
- good skills in working with modern maintenance systems
Furthermore, you need to have good skills in operating smaller vessels (between approximately 10-40 meters in length) and you must have a good ability to perform technical service and maintenance.

You see what needs to be done, take initiative, and take responsibility for your tasks. You are flexible, solution-oriented, and have good communication skills.
The position may require Swedish citizenship. A security check with a background check may be conducted before an employment offer.
You must substantiate qualifications, certificates, and medical certificates by attaching a current seafarer service extract from the Swedish Transport Agency.
